Your first tattoo is a brave choice. You’ve decided what design you want and where on your body, but now comes the next step: finding the right artist and the ideal studio.
Unfortunately, I’ve had quite a few clients who came to me without a very clear idea of what they wanted. That’s why I’ve always considered it my duty to guide those who need it.
A tattoo is not just art; it’s a promise to yourself. And permanent promises deserve respect. Respect from you, but also from those who will help you fulfill your dream.
1. Artist Portfolio: The Art Speaks for Them
A tattoo artist tells their story through their work. Check the portfolio. Look for details, precise lines, and well-applied colors. If their tattoos inspire admiration, that’s a good sign.
Every artist has a style. Realism, traditional, minimalist – choose the one that resonates with your vision. Don’t ask a fine-line specialist to create a complex neo-traditional piece. It’s like asking a novelist to write a poem. They might manage, but it won’t be extraordinary.
2. Studio Sanitation: Safety Above All
Step into the studio. Look around. A clean and organized space is the first sign of professionalism. Make sure the equipment is sterilized and the artist uses single-use needles.
Tattoo parlors must comply with the HYGIENE REGULATIONS from March 29, 2024, for beauty salons and tattoo, piercing, and dermal implant studios, issued by the Ministry of Health, published in the Official Gazette no. 330 on April 10, 2024.
Ask about sanitation procedures. Check if the studio has the necessary accreditations (health operating authorization and tattooist qualifications). If the staff responds with confidence and transparency, you’ve found a place where your health comes first.
3. Reviews: What Others Say Matters
Look for online reviews. Read the opinions of those who have already been in the artist’s chair or visited the studio. Client feedback can reveal what a portfolio can’t – how people felt when they were there.
A good place to find such reviews is the studio’s Google Maps profile. For example, Inside Tattoo has reviews on its account here.
Pay attention to negative reviews. If the same complaints appear frequently – lack of communication, delays, disappointing results – it may be time to look elsewhere.
4. Specializations: Choose the Right Tattoo Expert
Not all artists can do everything. Some excel at realistic portraits, others at abstract or geometric tattoos. Find an artist who is an expert in what you want.
For example, I specialize in Black and Grey realism tattoos. This way, I can bring to life the ideas of clients who want such tattoos, adapting them to artistic criteria such as contrast, highlights, and many other details that will ultimately turn the client’s wish into a painting they can wear forever.
Specialization means experience. And experience gives you confidence. Look for a tattooist who knows their craft and can turn ink into art.

An artist with a solid reputation has more than talent. They have respect within their community. Participation in conventions, awards, or recommendations from other artists are signs you’ve found someone who takes tattooing seriously.
For example, I attended several conventions in 2024, and this information can also be found on the studio’s Google Maps profile, in the events section. Usually, that’s where a professional studio that values communication with its clients presents its current activities.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. A true professional will answer patiently and explain every step. Reputation is not built overnight. It’s earned through hard work and dedication.
